WHAT IS A NATIONAL CAPITAL?

Canada is our country, Ottawa is our capital ! Will it remain a real national capital for all Canadians ?

According to our Constitution, English and French are the official languages of Canada and have equality of status and equal rights and privileges as to their use in all institutions of the Parliament and government of Canada.

English and French are the official languages of the City of Ottawa. The current municipal legislation provides that they possess and enjoy equality of status and equal rights and privileges as to their use in Council, in all Committees of Council and in the municipal administration.

Ottawa, our national capital, is expanding by virtue of a law adopted by the Ontario Legislature which amalgamates eleven urban and rural municipalities. 125 000 French-speaking citizens and 600 000 English-speaking citizens will be served by the newly restructured City of Ottawa, as well as millions of visitors from all over Canada and the world. Don't you think that the equality of English and French which currently prevails must be maintained in our expanded national capital ?

Don't you think that the expanded Ottawa must continue to recognize, reflect and respect English and French as the official languages of Canada ? Any setback could have unacceptable consequences for our country.

It is therefore very important, as a Canadian citizen, that you take a stand on this matter. Communicate your support,for a bilingual capital, to Mr. Claude Bennett, Chair of the Transition Board, at the address below, and also send a copy of your letter to the Editor of the newspapers published in your area.

QU'EST-CE QU'UNE CAPITALE NATIONALE ?

Le Canada est notre pays, Ottawa est notre capitale ! La nouvelle Ville d'Ottawa demeurera-t-elle la capitale de tous les Canadiens ?

Selon la constitution, le français et l'anglais sont les langues officielles du Canada; ils ont un statut et des droits et privilèges égaux quant à leur usage dans les institutions du Parlement et du gouvernement du Canada.

Le français et l'anglais sont les langues officielles de la ville d'Ottawa. La législation municipale en vigueur dispose qu'ils ont un statut et des droits et privilèges égaux quant à leur usage dans le Conseil et ses comités et dans l'administration.

Ottawa, notre capitale nationale, s'agrandit en vertu d'une loi de la législature de l'Ontario, qui fusionne onze municipalités urbaines et rurales. Ce sont 125 000 citoyens francophones et 600 000 citoyens anglophones que desservira la nouvelle ville restructurée d'Ottawa, ainsi que des millions de visiteurs de toutes les régions du Canada et du monde. Ne pensez-vous pas que l'égalité du français et de l'anglais qui prévaut aujourd'hui doit être maintenue dans notre capitale nationale agrandie ?

Ne pensez-vous pas qu'Ottawa agrandie doit continuer de reconnaître, refléter et respecter le français et l'anglais en tant que langues officielles du Canada ? Tout recul pourrait avoir de graves conséquences pour le pays.

Il est donc très important que vous fassiez connaître votre position en tant que citoyen canadien. Faites parvenir votre lettre d'appui, pour une capitale nationale bilingue, au Chef du Conseil de transition, M. Claude Bennett, à l'adresse ci-après, avec copie à l'éditeur des journaux de votre région.
