- In 1997, Stéphane Dion sent four letters to the separatists in Quebec City, in response to unsubstantiated claims they were making. The first was sent to Premier Bouchard. The second, third, and fourth were sent to Bernard Landry. (Landry's response in French). The fourth was sent to Jacques Brassard. The separatists officially responded to the partition issue in November, 1997 with this government brochure mailed to Quebecers.
- Dion wasn't taking it over the Supreme Court Reference either. He slapped Claude Ryan on the wrist before the decision, and called Bouchard to order after it was rendered by the Supreme Court.
- Stéphane Dion also sent letters to Lucien Bouchard on February 23 (regarding federal transfers to provinces) and April 9, 1999 (on the majority needed for separation)

- Jacques Parizeau was thinking ahead when he wrote this Victory Speech that Never Was. And one year after the 1995 referendum, his critical essay "Who Are We? Where are We Going?" took a jab at his former colleague, Lucien Bouchard. Also, he wrote an essay after speculation in late 1996 that he may run for leadership of the BQ.
