Family activities to do this summer in New Brunswick

New Brunswick is a maritime province rich in natural wonders: From the breathtaking vistas in our national parks to the endless beaches along our coastline, we’re spoiled! After two years under the thumb of COVID-19, everyone wants to make the most of summer. Here are a few family activities you can do on vacation or on your days off that will create memories to last a lifetime!

(Nearly) deserted beaches and islands

Are you or your kids not a fan of the chilly swims typical of Atlantic waters? Head for the famous beaches in Cap Pelé or Parlee Beach, near Shediac, home to Canada’s warmest salt water. Enjoy swimming, sandcastles, seafood feasts and an atmosphere worthy of any American seaside resort. If you want to stay for a few days, a nearby campground provides welcoming and comfortable accommodation, and several cottage complexes are not far away. Book now! A high volume of tourists is expected in New Brunswick this year.

Do you prefer peace and quiet? Pack a typical Acadian picnic and hit the road for Miscou or Lamèque Island, where you’re sure to get a beach (almost) to yourself. After you’ve rested up, don’t miss the chance to dine on fresh oysters right on the wharf!

Sea kayaking and ATVing

It’s no secret that most (big) kids love thrills. Why not get yours by taking to the water for a few hours of canoeing or sea kayaking in Kouchibouguac National Park? You may even come across a colony of grey seals!

Are you more the ATV type? Plan a getaway up the Acadian coast with Caraquet as your final destination, where you can visit the historic village. Plan to stop at the Shippagan Aquarium. Your kids will love the blue lobster collection. They can even touch them! For mountain biking enthusiasts, speeding down the Madawaska Trails will create exciting family memories.

Fishing: An activity for all ages

Fishing is definitely a must in New Brunswick! From salmon fishing on the Restigouche or Miramichi rivers to jigging mackerel offshore or even heading out with lobster fishers, unforgettable experiences await kids and grown-ups alike. Aboard the fishing boat, your kids can breathe the fresh sea air while learning fishing trade fundamentals. Who knows, maybe they’ll even see a whale or two breach the surface!

Wilderness camping or RVing

A weekend of camping at the water’s edge is easy enough to organize and a quick way to get away from it all! Pack up your car with a tent, a few provisions, your bathing suits and some warm clothes for the cool evenings. The choices are endless: Camping on the beach or in the forest, on a mountainside or even within a short drive of Moncton and its endless summer activities. New Brunswick has countless beautiful campgrounds!

Enjoying the Saint John River Valley at Hartt Island campground in New Brunswick or at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Nova Scotia are guaranteed family hits. Heatwave in the forecast? The Colibri campground water park in Caraquet awaits, promising a memorable day of splashing around with your family!

Discover New Brunswick by RV

RVs (recreational vehicles) have seen an unprecedented spike in popularity over the past two years. Everyone is eager to head out on a road trip and taste the freedom RVing has to offer! Sound like you? Several routes take you to every corner of New Brunswick, letting you discover all its charm and unique features. However, if you haven’t already gotten your hands on an RV, be aware that they’re becoming rather scarce and expensive these days due to high demand.
