A major donation to conclude the 2017 Verglas Acadie campaign

The 2017 Verglas Acadie Campaign, launched by UNI Financial Cooperation to help victims of the ice storm, just received a huge boost from the City of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu who made a $10,000 donation.

Upon learning of the dire situation New Brunswickers affected by the January 25 ice storm were in, the Montérégie region, which was itself hard hit by the 1998 Québec ice storm, called on the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu municipal council to help. The $10,000 donation was approved by the municipality to support our campaign which ended on February 28.

“It is only natural for Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu to help municipalities severely affected by natural disasters. We received support in 1998 following the ice storm, and in 2011 when we were hit by severe floods. Due to these events, mutual assistance has become one of our core values,” said the Mayor of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Michel Fecteau.

“We are greatly touched by these waves of solidarity which extend beyond our borders. We want to thank our Québec neighbors and, more specifically, the City of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, for their generosity during the difficult times experienced by many residents of the Acadian Peninsula and of the southeastern region of our province. Never could we have imagined that such a disaster could happen in our region, but it is also reassuring to see that people, who were touched by this situation, reacted by immediately offering support. Thank you to the people of Montérégie for this gesture worthy of our cooperation values, » stated Robert Moreau, Chief Executive Officer.

Thanks to this contribution from the City of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, the campaign raised over $54,000, including $19,329 donated by our members and UNI’s $25,000 initial contribution.
