What are e-mail fraud, phishing or spear phishing, spamdexing and smishing?
Phishing is a scam in which fraudsters attempt to acquire personal or financial information, such as passwords or card numbers, by posing as a trustworthy person or company via electronic communications. Phishing is typically carried out using e-mail or text messaging, but sometimes it's done over the phone.
In some cases, the fraudster sends an authentic-looking e-mail or text message (smishing) that appears to be from a legitimate company, asking recipients to disclose personal or financial information, which is then used to commit fraud.
Be suspicious if you receive an unexpected notification that you've received money via Interac e-Transfer. Contact the sender to confirm. If you can't confirm, please forward the notification immediately to phishing@interac.ca.
I've received Interac e-Transfer text messages but have never signed up for this service. How do I stop receiving them?
You received a text message notification because the sender chose the “text message” option to send you money via Interac e-Transfer. We recommend that you provide the sender with your e-mail address instead for sending.
To permanently stop all text messages with an Interac e-Transfer notification, reply to an Interac e-Transfer message by typing “STOP” (or send a new message with that word to 100001). Note: Once text message notifications have been stopped, they cannot be reinstated for any future transactions. Standard text messaging fees will apply.
I tried to send an Interac e-Transfer to a mobile number but received an e-mail or text message saying that it didn't go through. Why?
When sending funds by Interac e-Transfer, always check that you've entered the correct mobile number. You may have received the notification for the following reasons:
- The number you entered is a landline phone number.
- The number you entered is not a Canadian mobile number.
- The recipient blocked Interac e-Transfer notifications sent to their mobile number.
- Due to technical difficulties, the recipient's mobile number could not receive the message (e.g., mobile network not available).
- The mobile network operator does not support all text messages.
What should I do if I don't know the answer to the security question or if I've given the wrong answer several times?
If you don't know the answer to the security question, contact the sender. If you answer the security question incorrectly more than three times, the Interac e-Transfer transaction will be automatically cancelled.
How do I block an Interac e-Transfer request?
To block a request, you must go directly to the Preferences management page on the Interac website and follow these steps:
1. Enter your email address or mobile phone number and click Submit.
Security tip: If both options are listed on your Interac profile, we suggest doing this for each one.

3. Click Click here.
4. A page will open. To confirm your preference, click Click here again.
